Find the Others

It’s hard to tell people about your dreams. Especially since you have about a 90% chance of telling them to the wrong person and feeling like a stranger bird than you already felt five minutes earlier. People are going to tell you your ideas are silly, pointless, or wrong.

Just keep your head down, they’ll tell you. You’re so close to the perfect life. You’re just about to graduate or get a promotion or buy a house. Then everything will be perfect. You can start relaxing, and thinking about your next promotion or your next house. You’re one Ikea trip from being close to a complete life, isn’t that what you want?

If you want to change your life, you need to surround yourself with people who believe you can, who have done it themselves, and will help you along the way. You’re getting stuck because you’re telling your dreams to people who lost theirs a long time ago and can’t see how anyone in this world can accomplish the things they want to do.

This is easier said than done. One, because we’re usually surrounded by the wrong people and we can’t easily avoid them. They’re family or co-workers and sadly we cannot choose either. Two, because the right people are hard to find. The internet community makes it a lot easier to find the Others these days.
Seek out the Others, exchange ideas and stories and be honest. Let your guard down. Don’t pretend you know the answers to everything. Acknowledge that the unknown and mistakes are the spice of life. And have some fun. Don’t be so serious all the time. Yeah, I’m looking at you.

  • So very true. I've spent a lot of my life feeling my dreams weren't practical enough or were as you put it "silly". It took changing my own mindset from what society says we need to what I really want and not caring so much what people think. Do I want to work all the hours of the day for a certain house or lifestyle that I'm too tired to enjoy? or do I want to live simply and enjoy how I spend my time? Online I have found a vast community of "Others" who are doing the same. It has definitely helped me feel less crazy for thinking this way and helped keep me motivated when doubts come up. (but some Ikea stuff does still fit in my tin can…Lol!)

    • It's been a long time since I HAVEN'T owned something from Ikea, but having a couple magnetic spice tins or chairs is a long way from walking into one of those little display rooms and forking over your check card. You're exempt 😉
